The UMCommission is a non-profit entity associated with the United Methodist Church. It oversees the UMC's ministries at colleges and universities in Georgia, which range in size anywhere from a dozen to thousands of participants. The Commission provides support, training, oversight and resources to those campus organizations. I worked there from 2017 to 2024, developing and deploying the visual identity and expanding it to the organization's affiliates around Georgia and beyond.
Brand System
The Commission is involved on a large number of colleges and universities, as such the logo needed to exist harmoniously across a wide range of color palettes. It is primarily a behind-the-scenes support and administration partner, so the restricted palette, geometric shapes and structured sans serifs (Montserrat and Korolev) give the entire identity a sense of stability and solidity. In searching for visual concepts to grab onto in the development process, the organization's six core values and its interconnectivity across campuses around the nation inspired the hexagonal shape of the icons. The logos are always black or white, but often paired a 2- or 4-color gradient to tie together the broad range of colors at play in its ecosystem and prevent the visual language from becoming too dour and reserved.
Wesley Foundation Sub-branding
The on-campus organizations the Commission serves exist across an extremely diverse landscape. Colors, names, naming stipulations and more are all in flux from campus to campus. The logo system needed to be modular and customizable within controlled parameters to allow the individual programs to tailor their branding to their unique needs, as colors and even naming conventions varied from location to location. Montserrat being an open-source font was particularly important here as it made the files easily accessible and affordable for the individual Wesley Foundations, and easily sharable with their staff and students to help keep messaging and voice consistent.
